I've fitted a Rennshifter to both a 915 and 901 box. the 915's in my 72E and the 901 in a 71T (actually its a type911 box in the T).

I had a factory short shift already on the 72E but the Rennshifter is far, far more precise in its aciton. But the most startling transformation was with the 901 box which had a worn, standard shifter. Am I have just recently compeltely rebuilt the 901 box with new everything. the bushes in the shifter and coupler were also all new but after just 20 mins for the changeover to the Rennshifter, the difference was sensational.

You do have to be careful a bout beating the synchros but there just isnt that worry anymore of not finding exactly the gear you want (and need) !

And the shift lever travel is dramatically shortened. I love the positive feel of the shifter and now jumping between cars is not such a concern anymore, despite the fact one is RHD (72E) and the other is LHD.

James has really engineered a beautiful piece of Porsche equipment here and if you are fed up with a vague standard shifter, you wont regret spending the money. And the quick fit time gives almost instant gratification.

I finally got my first drive with the Rennshift in this morning. The shifter is a revelation. As expected it is incredibly positive, with the nice, well tracked feel you'd expect from a gateshifter (even though it isn't one). I never lost confidence in selecting the gear I wanted. There was no hunting, no praying, just the sweet "snick" of positive gear selection. I will remind you all that the shift character is still decidely 901. You can't force the shifts faster than the synchros will tolerate. You can't slack into hamfisted tendencies. You still need to be smooth and patient when engaging gears. The big difference is that you don't have to combine that patience with worry that you aren't hitting the right gear. That demon is now exorcised from my car. The price for this thing is a bargain. ...for a 901 owner the Rennshifter is hands down the best solution; I can't imagine anything shifting better...

Don't think twice, just buy it and thank yourself every time you drive the car.

It's not too often I buy a product I'm truly impressed with, but the latest version Rennshift shifter came today and it is outstanding. It's so well engineered and fabricated that I gave thought to just leaving it on my desk as a work of art! I did a test install and it functions as well as it looks. Love the manual reverse lock-out too - no more nicked gears with my 901!!

Just back from a test run with the shifter. Wow! For the 1st time in any 911 I've driven, I feel like I've actually got a 'real' gearbox. This thing is awesome. Downshifts into 1st gear at a 20MPH roll? 1st to 2nd gear with the 901? No grinding, no forcing, no problem. Feels like a brand new gearbox.

I put one in my 915 equipted 911 RS replica. Perfect. The shift action is so much better. Highly recommended. It is adjustable for shift reduction, too.

...I installed your fog light kit in the process of doing my repairs. Very nice kit, super easy to install. I had absolutely no trouble, and it took me about five minutes. What a great product...thanks again for the help and the light kit.

Get a Rennshift and you will NEVER be sorry. I have one in the race car and it allowed me to do 5th to 1st and 1st to 5th shifts several times a lap at a recent race in Tijuana with NO worries about missing a shift or grabing the wrong gear and spinning the engine to 10,000 RPM!

Hey James Just wanted to drop a note saying how much I love the shifter. Doesn't even compare to what was in there before.

James. Hello. The shifter is in and it is unreal!!!!
Anyone who has a 911 and doesn't put this shifter in to replace the factory shifter is missing out in a big way! The difference is night and day! I'm so impressed I want to drive it all the time. You did a fantastic job with the gating and the throw reduction. It shifts tighter than my 2002 BMW 325it 5 speed. I was not expecting such drastic results vs. the factory shifter. I had a new shift rod bushing and shift coupler installed also. I'm glad I found out about your shifter and I hope more 911 drivers do also.
Thank you

James: I forgot to do this..........e mail you to tell you how great the shifter is. Couldn't be more pleased. My mechanic, who races on a professional level..going to Daytona end of Oct........loves it too. It's like a different car!! Shifts like my BMW 540.
Thanks again,

I received my shifter and installed it this weekend. Is it unusual to find that no adjustment was needed at the coupler? After I installed it, I ran through the gears in the garage and then took it for a ride and everything just "snicked" into place! What a great feeling to know where each gear is and not feeling like I'm moving a broomstick in a barrel of oatmeal.
Thanks

the 'folklore' of the 914, especially the /4 but the /6 is not immune, is that there is a 'mystique' in having to stir the pot of gears in order to come up with something recogniseably similar to the gear you actually wanted. this is, of course, bull - brought on by people unwilling to deal with the design characteristics of the original shift mechanism and, perhaps, grown used to bushings worn and mounts disintegrated with age.

it doesn't have to be that way, as racers and owners of new cars have always known -- but there hasn't been a lot we could do about it either, short, perhaps, of installing the beautiful but frightfully expensive 935-style shifter from SmartRacing (i still want one, someday, tho...). but enter the RennShifter, a reasonably priced, high-precision contender in the shifter arena, and I Like It.

The WEVO 915 gate shifter is, of course, a beauty to behold -- but it's simply not an option for 901/911/914 transmissions. the Rennshifter is.

on the 911's test drive - to establish a baseline - the pattern was extremely vague and offset too far left - an adjustment i knew i'd have to make at the shift coupler.

the RennShifter comes complete with a new cup bushing, and i'd already bought a new tunnel bushing. both were somewhat but not horribly worn in my car. the instructions were easy to follow - right up to the point where the stick is installed with a 7/32" Allen wrench - and 99% of my Allens are metric... but miraculously, at the bottom of the Allen key drawer, was a 7/32", left over fromm some forgotten project. not the highest of quality tools, but when 5mm is too small and 6mm too big, and the screws in question need only be 'tight enough' -- it'll do...

with the 33% travel reduction i selected (of the three choices - 0, 20, 33...) shift coupler adjustment is pretty touchy - i think there must be exactly one position on the shaft that aligns the 'standard' 2-3 gate along with permitting travel to the spring-loaded R-1 and 4-5 gates -- but when you find it -- it's heaven.

took a quick post-install test-drive, and every gear is exactly where you think it ought to be. shifting is effortless, intuitive, and -not- a fishing expedition. it's -almost- good enough to dissuade me from ordering a Stomski shift coupler in the morning -- but since the tunnel shift boot was rotten to shreds and i need to open the rod again to address that, i can't resist that one last improvement.

but i can wholeheartedly endorse the RennShifter - the car is transformed. good price, good people. if you have a 901/911/914 transmission car, you owe it to yourself to check it out, whether your car spends its life on the track or in traffic.

i have no connection with the good folks at RennShift except as a satisfied customer.

I put a Rennshift in my '72 tailshifter. In concert with a little sweetening of the mechanical fits at the steel ball on the end of the shift rod and the inside actuating lever the shifting is great. That gear-bag feeling on downshifting is completely gone and the upshifts are nice and positive.

I really couldn't be happier cause now I've avoided doing the whole tranny, linkage, motor mounts swap to get decent shifting!

Now the side shift tranny I've got in my garage will become a parts tranny when I need it later. Or maybe I'll just sell the whole thing and buy something more fun to play with...

I had contacted you after I had installed the Rennshift that I had borrowed from a friend to use in my race car... Last weekend I had a chance to try your shifter at a PCA Club race and was extrememly impressed with the shifting action and the precise pattern from the shifter. The shifting is very smooth and effortless. I need to purchase one to replace the unit I borrowed from my friend. It is for a 914 side shifter.
Great Product

DONE! Just took a spin. I can't believe how much improved the shifting is! A notchy, positive feel that wasn't there before. Good product. Exactly as advertised. And if I can get it in, anyone can.

I have it installed and ran at the track with it. It feels real nice and greatly improves my shifting confidence. It feels like a gated shifter, no more moving the shift handle in circles trying to find a gear. However; you need to adjust it properly on the shift rod and you still need to have your bushings in good shape. I took it off at the track to work on my pedals and didn't get it adjusted right at first and had trouble finding third when coming down from 4th, kept catching 5th. I came in and we adjusted it and no more problems. So it's not a majic stick but a big improvement over the stock stick. I recommend it after you install new bushings. It will feel like a new car.

Well I finally got to drive my car today. This shifter is sweet. Fourth gear is in the same place every time. And the 4 to 1 shift ain't gonna happen any more. If I had it to do over I would probably order the 33% reduction as I had a short shift kit and I ordered the 18% reduction and this is a little longer throw but I'll get used to it real fast. It's like driving a different car.

...new shifter available for 911/914’s that I had the opportunity to install last week and it is a work of art!

The throw reduction I have (20%) seems to be a perfect balance between the stock setup and the extreme shortness of some other shifters I have installed.

It is VERY smooth and precise, as a matter of fact, it is the smoothest shifter I have ever driven in a 911, and I have tried almost everything….

I was able to go out and find some open space for some very spirited driving this weekend and it downshifts very smoothly and up shifts like a dream. The shifting feels so precise and I never even came close to "finding" the wrong gear that can so easily be done with a stock shifter. The side-to-side movement seems reduced and is very precise, it gives a nice feel to the overall shifting and the spring tension is just enough but not hard.
